- The India Reserve Battalion, A&N Islands (IRBn) was established in the year 2002 on the pattern of the Central Para Military Forces and is trained to deal with Insurgency, Militancy and Terrorism
- The present strength of the Battalion is 834 including all ranks
- The battalion has been assisting the Civil Police in handling Law & Order situations and in maintaining internal security of the Islands
- Besides, IRBn Jawans are deployed at Look Out Posts (LOPs) at strategically important location, such as Narcondum, East Island, Interview Island, Louis-inlet-Bay, Tillong Choung, Mackachuwa and Afra Bay for preventing infiltration of foreign Nationals into our territorial boundaries.
- IRBn assists civil police in conducting regular anti-poaching operations.
- IRBn personnel are deployed to guards some various vital installations at Port Blair.
- This battalion has a sizeable component of trained and motivated Jawans for performing special forces duties.
Special capabilities include the following:
- Reconnaissance and surveillance in hostile environments
- Offensive action through trained commandos
- Counter-terrorism operations including Bomb detection and disposal
- Sabotage and demolition
- Hostage rescue
- Disaster Management
- IRBn. personnel have also exhibited their talent in sports and cultural activities
- Public entertainment shows and demonstration on self defense etc. are being organized from time to time in almost all the inhabitant Islands by this battalion.
