- Andaman and Nicobar Home Guard Organization was established in 1965 as Voluntary Force to assist the local police for Law & Order duties.
- Functions under the command of SP as Commandant (HG) assisted by the DySP.
- Present strength of Home Guards is 792 including 325 Home Guards who have been regularized in supernumerary posts in the Group ‘D’.
- Temporary Home Guard volunteers are engaged for a period of 03 years. The criterion for enrollment in Home Guard is that the applicant should be IVth Pass, more than 18 years and less than 50 years.
- Identity Cards have been issued and of HRA arrears to the tune of Rs. 12.44 Crore have been disbursed to the regularized Home Guards.
- Keeping in view of huge requirement of Home Guards, a proposal for creation of 200 additional Home Guards volunteers is under consideration.
- From the month of October, 2013 the A&N Home Guard Organization have started conducting refresher/basic training for Regular/Non-Regular Home Guards in batches. The Home Guard are imparted with indoor and outdoor training including UAC, handling of weapons etc. The following subjects are covered:
- Disaster Preparedness
- Search and Rescue
- Fire Fighting
- Beat duties and crowd control
- First Aid
- Soft skill development
- Domestic violence cases
- Traffic Rules and Violations
- Camps : Recently weeklong camp from 01-09-2014 to 06-09-2014 was organized at Long Island under the leadership of Dy. SP (Rangat) in which total of 19 Regular Home Guards & 30 Non-Regular Home Guards were attended. They were engaged for beach cleaning and they were also imparted techniques about using fire fighting equipments, basic knowledge on crowd control, first aid techniques and Disaster Management etc.
- Disaster Management Course: - In order to familiarize more techniques to handle the situations during disaster a total 48 Home Guards were detailed for one month “Disaster Management Course” with NDRF commenced from 10-12-2014 at IRBn (HQ), Port Mout.
