Port Blair, Jan 29: Next time you get caught for a traffic offence, you will have to digitally sign the fine receipt and collect a printout on the spot. Andaman Nicobar Traffic police is in the process of rolling out an e-challan system, which will not only bring down instances of policemen seeking bribes but also help in monitoring repeat offenders.

According to sources, the Andaman Nicobar police is all set to introduce mobile based e-challan, for which an application has been prepared, where all the details of license holder, vehicle details are available. It is also learnt that a trial was done to use this system by the traffic police officials but due to some network issue they faced some problems and therefore it has been sent back for rectification, sources said.

As per reports available here by next week after rectification the A&N police is going to re-start this process, sources confirmed

Now with this digital footprint, repeat offenders can be tracked and the policemen can analyze the type, nature and location of traffic offences easily. The fine will be doubled on every challan for regular traffic rule violators, sources added.

Each traffic policeman will be given an unique password to operate the application, there will be greater transparency in accounting and collection of fines.

Bangalore pioneered the introduction of an e-challan system through the use of Blackberry devices to record all offences digitally in a central server. A number of other cities such as Delhi and Hyderabad have begun introducing similar systems.
