History
The North & Middle Andaman Revenue District came in existence on 18/08/2006. However, the Police District was formed on 21/01/2009. The office of SP (D) N&M Andaman headed by Shri. P. Karunakaran, IPS with a handful staff started functioning in the old Govt. building belonging to Registrar Co-operative Society. Earlier, there was only one Sub-Division having control on 05 Police Stations viz. Diglipur, Kalighat, Mayabunder, Billiground and Rangat in this district. The office of the Dy. SP N&M Andaman was also functioning at Mayabunder in the PS building.
On 18/03/2013, two separate Sub-Division namely 1. Diglipur and 2. Rangat was formed vide A&N Administration Notification dated 18/03/2013 circulated vide DGP’s endorsement No. DGP/Genl/2/11/2013/1924 dated 18/03/2013 with the following Police Stations under the charge of respective SDPOs.

Rangat Sub-Division:-
- PS Baratang
- PS Kadamtala
- PS Rangat
- PS Billiground
There are 07 Police Stations, 09 Out Posts, 08 JPPs and 04 Look Out Post functioning in the North & Middle Andaman District as indicated below:-

Diglipur Sub-Division:-
The area of Diglipur Sub-Division starts from Kainchi Nalla towards Mayabunder Jetty covering the distance of appx 17 KMs on the northern direction on ATR and from Panighat Junction up to Kalipur via Diglipur covering a distance of appx 82 Kms. On the other side from Diglipur to Hathilevel via Radha Nagar area it extends to 38 KMs appx. The Police Station Mayabunder is situated close to Mayabunder jetty nearby Distt Office and other offices. The police station Kalighat is located around 65 Kms from Panighat Jn. and PS Diglipur is located appx 70 KMs from Panighat Junction.
Rangat Sub-Division:-
The Rangat Sub-Division covers the area starting from Baratang Island to Billiground which is connected by road and located on the ATR except Baratang to Kadamtala where one has to cross a creek in the sea from Gandhi Ghat jetty to Uttara jetty. There is vehicle ferry service provided to this sea route for the general public which is plying continuously from 0500 hrs 1700 hrs, The area of Baratang is covering a distance of appx 35 KMs which extends to Potatang which appx 10 KMs from Middle strait jetty towards Jirkatang. The entire Middle strait area comes under the Jarawa reserve area. Similarly, the area of PS Kadamtala extends to appx 25 KMs on ATR which also comes under Jarawa Reserve Area. However, the population is settled up to appx 10 KMs to a village called Phooltala, beyond which no settlement has taken place. The Police Stations Rangat and Billiground are covering an area of appx 40 KMs and appx 38 KMs respectively.
Population Composition
The population of North & Middle Andaman consists mainly of Ranchi, Bengalis, Malyali and Tamilians population. The total population of North & Middle Andaman is around 1,64,000 which is scattered all over the settlement/ encroachment areas.
Crime Data:-
In general, the crime rate is low compared to South Andaman District but various nature of IPC, Local & Special law are registered which are increasing day by day. A total of 538 cases were registered in the year 2012, Out of which IPC- 141, Excise cases-395 and others-02 cases registered. Whereas a total number of cases reported reached figure 476 as on 13/11/2013 (IPC-131, Excise 338 and others 07) In addition, a large number of Un-natural death cases are also reported in this district. During the year 2012, a total of 70 cases of Un-natural death was reported in the district of N & M Andaman. Whereas the figure reached to 84 as on 13/11/2013. It may be noted that the UD cases are very high in this district.
